The Next Michael Jordan

NBA Players Who've Been Compared to Air Jordan

From Kobe Bryant to Harold Miner, NBA fans and analysts have searched far and wide for the next Michael Jordan.

For years the media and fans have made unfair comparisons between young, athletic prospects and Michael Jordan, deemed one of the greatest players ever to play in the NBA. The list is a long one, though it can be hard to determine whether any of those youngsters have come close to Air Jordan.

It's important to understand just how good Michael Jordan was. It's true that he didn't win his first title until Scottie Pippen came along, but he was no slouch even before that. As a rookie, Jordan averaged 28.2 ppg, 6.5 rbpg and 5.9 apg, while shooting 51.5% from the field and 84.5% from the line. No one on the list below can boast of those percentage even in their best season. In 1988-1989, Jordan averaged 32.5 ppg and a whopping 8.0 rbpg and 8.0 apg to go along with nearly 3 spg. In that season, he shot an incredible 53.8% from the field and 85% from the line.

MJ was a six-time NBA champion (from 1991 to 1993 and 1996 to 1998); he was a five-time NBA MVP, a 10-time All-NBA First Team member and one-time All-NBA Second Team member, he won Defensive Player of the Year in 1988 and was a nine-time All-Defensive First Team member, a 14-time All-Star (and three time All-Star MVP), former Rookie of the Year, a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and was voted as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

Here are some of the players in the last twenty seasons who have been compared to Jordan:

  • Kobe Bryant (Played for: Los Angeles Lakers) Bryant was drafted immediately out of high school in 1996 by the Charlotte Hornets (now the New Orleans Hornets). The Hornets used its thirteenth pick in a swap for the Lakers' big man, Vlade Divac. They regret that now. Bryant emerged as one of the game's top players and has been with the Lakers for ten seasons. With Shaquille O'Neal at his side, he's earned three NBA championship rings and draws more comparisons to Michael Jordan than any other player on this list. His best statistical season came in 2005-2006, when he averaged 35.4 ppg, 5.3 rbpg and 4.5 apg. Against the Toronto Raptors, he even scored 81 points in a single game, which is second most in NBA history (Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 in a game).
  • Vince Carter (Played for: Toronto Raptors; New Jersey Nets) Right after the Golden State Warriors drafted Carter with the fifth overall pick in 1998, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors for the fourth overall pick, Antawn Jamison (his college teammate and friend). Throughout his career, Carter has dazzled with his high flying dunks and incredible athleticism. His best statistical season was in 2000-2001, when he averaged 27.6 ppg, 5.6 rbpg and 3.9 apg. However, many think of him as somewhat of an underachiever and his passion has come into question before.
  • Anfernee Hardaway (Played for: Orlando Magic; Phoenix Suns; New York Knicks and Miami Heat) Drafted with the third overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 1993 NBA Draft, Hardaway was immediately traded to the Orlando Magic for Chris Webber, the first overall pick. Hardaway teamed with Shaquille O'Neal to form one of the most exciting one-two-punches in the league. His best season came in 1995-1996, when he averaged 21.7 ppg and 7.1 apg. Injuries hit him in the prime of his career and he hasn't been the same since.
  • Grant Hill (Played for: Detroit Pistons; Orlando Magic; Phoenix Suns) Hill was drafted in 1994 by the Pistons with the third overall pick. His career had just started to peak, and he was looking more and more like a superstar, when a significant injury changed his career forever. In 1999-2000, Hill averaged 25.8 ppg, 6.6 rbpg and 5.2 apg in 74 games before missing the tail end of the season and having career altering surgery that summer. The next two seasons, he played in only 18 games.
  • LeBron James (Played for: Cleveland Cavaliers) It's hard to imagine that any player ever to play in the NBA was as hyped up as much as James was coming out of high school. Yet, since the Cavs made him the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, he hasn't disappointed. At this point in his career, his numbers are on par with where MJ was at the same place. James' best statistical season was in 2005-2006 when he averaged 31.4 ppg, 7.0 rbpg and 6.6 apg (and he was on 21 years old!). Moreover, James led his Cavs to the championship game in 2007. The sky is the limit for this young phenom.
  • Tracy McGrady (Played for: Toronto Raptors; Orlando Magic; Houston Rockets) "T-Mac" was drafted with the ninth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in 1997. He played in his cousin, Vince Carter's, shadow for three seasons before moving to Orlando, where he boosted his scoring over 10 ppg. He led the league in scoring in 2002-2003 while playing for a bad Orlando squad. In that season, he averaged 32.1 ppg, 6.5 rbpg and 5.5 apg. T-Mac has been battling back problems for the past few seasons.
  • Harold Miner (Played for: Miami Heat; Cleveland Cavaliers) "Baby Jordan" drew unfair comparisons to Jordan even in college. As it turned out, Miner didn't have much in common with the legend other than in his ability to wow fans with mind-blowing dunks. Miner played just four seasons and was a bit of a disappointment in the last two. His best season was his second season, when he averaged 10.5 ppg.
  • Jerry Stackhouse (Played for: Philadelphia 76ers; Detroit Pistons; Washington Wizards; Dallas Mavericks) Stackhouse was drafted with the third overall pick by the 76ers in the 1995 NBA Draft. He's always been electrifying and athletic and actually outscored Michael Jordan in their first meeting. However, he wasn't shy about telling the world about it, and MJ showed him up pretty badly in their second meeting. Still, "Stack" has had a pretty good career, and even led the league in scoring as a Piston in 2000-2001 when he averaged 29.8 ppg in 80 games. He's currently the 6th man for the Dallas Mavericks.
  • Dwayne Wade (Played for: Miami Heat) Wade was drafted with the fifth overall pick by the Heat in 2005. Thanks to the help of superstar center Shaquille O'Neal, he has already won an NBA title (2006). His explosiveness and athleticism helps him to dominate at both ends of the floor, and even though he's a bit turnover prone at times (averages 3.8 topg for his career), he has put up some pretty impressive numbers. His best statistical season came in 2006-2007, when he posted 27.4 ppg, 4.7 rbpg and 7.5 apg. Unfortunately, he was only able to play in 51 games due to injury.

Kobe is overrated. There will NEVER be another Jordan. He is the best basketball player to ever grace the courts. Lebron has a chance to be the best... but he has his work cut out for him. He's well on his way though.

I agree there will never be another MJ. LeBron is close but different.

Both of those guys are trading on the new sports stock market website www.oneseason.com. Their ticker names are AIRJ and KING and they are two of the most valued athletes on the site. The game is SOOOO addicting and you can also find other basketball stars like KOBE, MELO, WADE, IVER, SHAQ, ODEN, AMRE and other star athletes from other sports too.

kobe bryant is too selfish to be the next jordan. lebron matched kobes stats his first year in the nba while kobe was in the league for several years already. when kobe started out in the nba he warmed the bench! there is no competition to jordan. without him there would be no kobe or lebron. but make no mistake about it...LEBRON JAMES IS THE BETTER ATHLETE, PERSON, AND BASKETBALL PLAYER PERIOD!!!!!! Lebron will invent a new level of expectations in the nba just like jordan did.

hehe except Kobe sucks in comparrison.
He has set records for blocked shots by a guard.
Steals are 2nd highest of all-time behind Stockton.
Steals per game average is 3rd all-time.
95-96, when 3-point line was made shorter, Jordan was 111/260, .427 from 3
and for a guard, an excellent rebounder at 6.2 per game.
0-91 - Jordan set franchise records, first 61 wins
beat LA 4 games to 1, 15-2 during playoffs,
during finals, 31.2 ppg with 56% shooting, 11.4 assists, 6.6 rebounds,
2.8 steals, and 1.4 blocks!!!
91-92 - 67-15
beat blazers in finals, Jordan 35.8 PPG, 4.8 rpg, 6.5 apg
53% from floor in that series
in the first game of that series, Jordan scored a finals-record 35 points
in the first half, including a record-setting six three-point field goals.
95-96 Magic were swept in the playoffs easy, because of MJ's will from
last seasons loss..... they had a record of 60-22 with Shaq/Penny.
92-93 62-20 Phoenix Suns were beaten in the finals in 6 games
somehow Barkley got MVP although MJ had 32.6/6.7/5.5 campaign
averaged a finals record of 41.0 PPG during the six game series
scored 40 or more in 4 consecutive games
93-94 - Bulls 55-27 record
94-95 Chicago was 31-31 at mid-March before Jordan's return
95-96 - Bulls 72-10
- bulls lost only 3 games in 4 series, defeating Seattle
96-97 - Bulls 69-11
beaten to MVP by Karl Malone, Jordan had a buzzer-beating jumpshot,
had his "flu game" scoring 38 points including the game deciding 3-pointer
with less than a minute remaining
Posted the only triple double in all-star game history (but didn't recieve
MVP award)
97-98 - bulls 62-20 record. Got all-star game MVP, first team, defensive team
etc.
This year against the Jazz, they were underdogs. Jordan scored a clutch
layup over several jazz defenders to still trail by two, then
stole the ball from Malone, crossed Russell, and made the game
winning shot. This finals, he averaged 33.5 ppg, including the 45 in game 6
MJ never ever would have allowed a team of his to bow down by nearly 40
in the Finals. Michael would have taken the game over and made it his own.
Whereas Bryant, when the fakers needed him most, disappeared.
L.A. was 32-14 (.695) this season when Bryant attempted 20 shots or more
and just 3-5 when he took 30-plus shots. The Lakers were 33-3 when he kept
his attempts under 20.
75% Kobe's 50+ came against bad teamsw/losing records
71% Jordan's against winning teams

Jordan scored 63 against the 67 win celtics!
69 against the playoff Cavs team with excellent defense

It is much harder to score a large amount of points against a
playoff level team, especially under playoff level intensity.
The 81 point game has been overblown in the media.

Kobe's 81 point game - 46 shots, 20 free throws
in the next game, Melo took 16 shots, made 13
imagine if he had taken 46 (mostly uncontested) shots and
20 free throws, he could have easily scored the 81 as well.

Raptors were dead last in Defense that year, rarely contested his shots.
Jalen Rose, god aweful defender defending Kobe
Jordan faced Ehlo, known to be an excellent defender
The Raptors were lucky to win more than 20 that year

Jordan won 10 scoring titles,
6 of which his shooting was over 50% (never will be done again)
6 finals MVPS
5 league MVPS,
Defensive player of the year
81 points is such a small feat in contrast

Kobe Bryant has the three worst shooting 50 point games not only
since 1986, but the three worst 50 point games (in terms of efficiency)
in NBA history. These are among the few games in history in which a
player scored 50 points, but didn't even make half of his shots from
the field. In other words, these are achievements of volume shooting,
not efficiency. But these aren't flukes, either. In terms of shooting,
Kobe also has 7 of the 15 worst, and 10 of the 25 worst 50 point games
since 1986. That's half of all of his 50 point efforts. Jordan has merely
one game in the bottom 25.

Jordan's #1, #5 and #8 games

24-29, 52 points, Nov. 16, 1988

21-27, 59 points, April 3, 1988

21-28, 53 points, March 7, 1996

Kobe's 3 worst 50 pt. games in history

17-38, 53 points, December 15, 2006

19-44, 53 points, March 30, 2007

17-41, 50 points, January 7, 2006

the most that ppl forget about jordan is that he was retired for almost
2 seasons(93-94, came back played last 17gms 94-95), MJ has 32,292 career
points, if he would've stayed those years he'd have atleast 35,000 and at
least 40,000 if he hadnt retired in from (98-2001) came back and averaged
22.9pts in 01-02(came back late played last 60gms, then 20pts in 02-03,
played all 82gms)

Kobe-not close

and finally,

Kobe isn't even the best player right now! Since he's a Laker, he's severely overrated

Lebron, Wade, and debatably CP3 are all more dominant players.

And yet Kobe fans compare him to Jordan? hehe, here, learn your roots

Seriously, does anyone bother to read the entire article...no, no,...even the first paragraph before spouting off? The article is about how none of these players will ever be the next Michael Jordan. They're simply players people have compared him to in the past. lol

kobe, lebron, and wade are damn good players BUT there will never i mean never be another michael jordan to play in nba history! the other 3 are playing in way different times than michael jordan! you just can't compare them. it's almost saying you could compare babe ruth to any player in the mlb today. you just can't compare. times are way different. MJ is and always will be the best to ever play the game of basketball. he has done many things that players can't do now or they can do a little bit more. MJ is by far the best though. i'm not putting kobe, lebron, or d-wade down but MJ is the best ever.

Phil Partington :
I don't think the author of that article has very well-though-out points at all. Let's take a look:

--He says that Kobe's stats were hurt because he came right out of high school. I'll buy this, but that doesn't negate the fact that Kobe hasn't had a single season comparable to Jordan's overall stats in his prime. That said, stats are always going to be misleading as they're mostly based on circumstances, so I have a tough time using that as an argument.

--He suggests that Kobe's career FG% is so much lower than Jordan's because he shot more threes. That's silly to me, because their 3PFG% is pretty close, and neither one's is overly spectacular (though they're not bad). That said, it seems Jordan was the wiser player not to take so many threes.

--He suggests that people saying Jordan was a better teammate/person than Kobe is ridiculous. I never argued against that. I don't think most do (or I don't hear that argument much). Jordan never had much patience for teammates who couldn't hack it. I would say that MJ learned how to score within the offense, which is something that Kobe doesn't always do. That said, he's getting better at it.

--The author says that Jordan's teammates were very undervalued. There is certainly truth to that (though they did also add Toni Kukoc, whose stats didn't reflect how much versatility and match up dilemmas for opponents he brought to the table)

--He says the 90s were weak because they were watered down by expansion teams, but the 2000s have those same teams (though some moved) plus the Bobcats. How does that argument hold water? To say Jordan didn't play great teams is naive and makes me think the author didn't grow up in the era. Houston may not have had a Scottie Pippen, but they played wicked team defense and Hakeem was just that good; the Sonics were a lot better than people realize with one of the better point guards of all time at both ends of the floor, a budding superstar power forward, an all-star third option in Detlef Schrempf, and several key role players, like Hersey Hawkins and Sam Perkins; the Knicks were a tough-nosed, defensive team who played well as a unit; the Utah Jazz fit that bill, too. If any of those teams had been around after the Jordan/Pippen Bulls, I'd wager to say that a good lot of them might have championship rings.

--Kobe is a great defender...very underrated. It's just that sometimes he doesn't show up on defense as much as people would like. Otherwise, I'd agree somewhat with the author.

--Regarding "who's more clutch," Kobe's certainly proven he can be extremely clutch. My only argument for MJ getting the edge would be that I see Kobe forcing it more in the clutch than Jordan. He tended (in his prime) to rely on teammates when appropriate, and to me, that's clutch thinking.

While there is certainly a case for the debate to be close (Kobe is a stud), that article isn't convincing enough for me. The other argument I've heard is that there are more 'superstar' guards today than there were in the 90s. While I'm not sure I agree with that, I could also make the case that today's guards don't have to content with the likes of a young Shaq, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Alonzo Mourning (healthy), Dikembe Mutombo, Patrick Ewing, among others contesting every penetration they make. Today's guards seem to get a lot of easy dunks.
